NO Doodling here!
Why We Don’t Doodle…
If you are at all familiar with standard poodles you’ve certainly heard of and probably seen numerous “doodles” as well. Doodles are a mix of two breeds….a poodle and virtually any other purebred dog that you can think of. The most common myths about poodle mixes are that they are an actual breed, and are hypoallergenic, low maintenance dogs with great temperament and health. In reality, these dogs are mixed breeds sold at premium prices. They lack standard, breed type, and predictable temperament. They are NOT more healthy than the original breeds used to make them, are NOT hypoallergenic (mixed dogs usually are not), DO NOT all have easygoing, temperaments, and DO require all of the grooming and coat maintenance required of poodles.
While there are responsible doodle breeders who do health and temperament test their dogs, doodle popularity has caused the exploitation and mistreatment of both purebred dogs and mixes by puppy mills and unscrupulous backyard breeders. These poor mill dogs wind up needing to be rescued and contribute to the overpopulation in shelters.
I would like to clarify that I do not dislike doodles! I have met many sweet and smart doodles over the years. In fact, some of my puppy families have both poodles and doodles! I just personally value the predictability, great temperament, and longevity that accompanies an ethically bred Standard Poodle. I prefer to know my dogs’ lines and enjoy the accomplishment of proving my dogs in the show ring as well as in various sports. For these reasons and more, I choose to preserve and protect the Standard Poodle breed.
